“Law Folks Telling Jokes” Comedy Fundraiser
Wednesday, February 5, 2014Ottawa, ON – Law students are organizing the third annual “Law Folks Telling Jokes” comedy fundraising show. The funds raised will support Ottawa ACORN, a non-profit organization of low to moderate income families uniting communities for justice; and the University of Ottawa Social Justice Caucus (SJC), an initiative by law students and faculty aimed at enhancing social justice programs in the legal profession and the broader community. The show will happen Friday, February 7, 2014 at 8:30 PM at Pier 21 (111 Parent Avenue). Tickets can be purchased before the event for $10 or $15 at the door. All proceeds go to ACORN and SJC.
“All performers in the show will be law students or law professors. Lawyers tend to be the punch line in many jokes, so we decided to embrace the abuse by supporting two great causes” joked Zac DeLong, a third year law student who is organizing the event. “We will be selling tickets in the entrance to Fauteux, the University of Ottawa Law Faculty building, Feb 4th and 6th from 11:30 AM – 1 PM; otherwise, you can purchase tickets at the door for $15. Everyone is welcome to come see law folks telling jokes.”
A portion of the funds will go to the ACORN, which started a campaign in 2012 to match Ottawa law students with modest income families who needed assistance in tenant matters.
The initiative has been an excellent way for modest income families and law students to better understand the Residential Tenancy Act. Ottawa ACORN complements well with the SJC, which supports organizations like ACORN that give law students a chance to be involved in social justice causes.
“Ottawa ACORN and the SJC are two excellent avenues for law students to use their skills for the benefit of those who are less fortunate,” concluded DeLong. “We look forward to raising some much needed funds for Ottawa ACORN and the SJC.”
