Social Justice Week 2014 in Oshawa

Here is a list of events taking place during Social Justice Week 2014 at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa. There are more details coming for the event on Tuesday, February 4th and I will forward them along once they firm up. Social Justice Week 2014 Fair
Students, faculty, and members of the community are invited to engage with community, labour, and activist organizations to kick off Social Justice Week 2014. This is an opportunity for individuals to learn about, and get involved with, social justice issues in their community.

Rape Culture
We are currently planning and organizing an event focusing on rape culture, and mainstream media. More details to come!
Wednesday, February 5th (11AM – 2PM, Regent Theatre)
(Despair)ities: Impacts of Canada’s drug laws
We are excited to announce that world renowned academic and author, Dr. Gabor Maté will be delivering a 90 minute keynote speech on the impact of Canada’s drug laws. This symposium-style panel discussion will also focus on how visible minorities and Indigenous Peoples, women, and people living in poverty are disproportionately affected by the criminalization of drugs.

Thursday, February 6th (3PM – 6PM, Regent Theatre)
Tar Sands, Indigenous Rights, and Line 9 Pipeline Reversal
Please join us at 3PM on Thursday, February 6th at the Regent Theatre for a keynote speech by internationally renowned Indigenous rights and climate justice activist Clayton Thomas-Muller. This presentation will focus on tar sands development in western Canada and how expansion of the tar sands threatens Indigenous rights to the land and has a devastating impact on the environment. Also under discussion will be the impacts the tar sands have on water and the controversial Line 9 pipeline which will be shipping tarsands oil through northern Oshawa by the end of this year.
Clayton Thomas-Muller is a member of the Mathias Colomb Cree Nation also known as Pukatawagan in Northern Manitoba, Canada. Based out of Ottawa, Clayton is a campaigner for the Defenders of the Land & Idle No More, as well as a co-director of the Indigenous Tar Sands (ITS) Campaign of the Polaris Institute.
