Tuesday, August 5, 2014

As Waterloo Region residents’ hydro bills continue to skyrocket, 919 people sought help from the Waterloo Region Energy Assistance Program in 2013.

Most of those recipients – 55 per cent – live in Kitchener. Cambridge recipients totalled 32 per cent and Waterloo recipients totalled 9 per cent, with four per cent going to the townships.

The amount dolled out by the region for the program was $461,608, paid to low-income consumers whose hydro bills were in arrears.

A staff report paints a picture of the average household using the energy assistance program. It’s a family with children, whose average monthly income is $1,432.
